On this page you will find out more about what we are learning in Class 2 this term.

Our timetable gives you a guide to the subjects we study each day, we may not stick rigidly to this timetable, but hopefully it will help you know which days we need our P.E. kits  and to have discussions about what we are learning at school.

There are also some reminders about homework and at the bottom of this page some useful resources for additional home learning.

English

English – The children will read and write a range of poetry and stories this term, focusing on settings, and characterisation. They will write reports, recounts and look at other non fiction texts. Newly acquired skills will be developed through cross-curricular writing. Handwriting, punctuation and grammar work will run alongside these activities, aiming for accuracy. All children will be expected to join their writing as we learn and revise the four joins. This is particularly supportive for spelling patterns.

Spellings – Children will be given a spelling pattern, rule or a specific list to explore and learn each week. This will be given on a Friday. There will be periodic assessments throughout the term.

Reading  will continue on a daily basis – progress is noticeably improved where this happens at home too, and it is not possible for individual reading at school. Class emphasis will be individually to start with, but we will then move to a wider range of activities in guided groups (as appropriate to each child). Books will be changed as needed, but will require an adult signature to confirm that the book has been completed and discussed for understanding. Children are asked to bring the completed book for changing on arrival in the morning – there will be lots of reminders for the children!

Maths
The children will be encouraged to use their knowledge of numbers and place value to calculate and solve problems using all four number processes: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Mondays will have a measure and shape focus : ‘Time’, then 2D shape this term. Learning to tell the time is a key objective for Y2. Support at home, for both Y2 and Y3, will be much appreciated. Practice makes perfect!

The children will be reinforcing their recall of rapid number facts eg. Simple number bonds (to 10, 20,100…), lots of counting (forwards AND backwards). Y2: To 100, in 1’s and 10’s. (from any number, eg, 13,23,33…) Y3: As Y2, but to 1000, and in 100’s.

Y3 also need to continue to practise tables already introduced. We will all be starting or moving on with these later in the term.

Art

Giant art – a dinosaur theme to begin with.

Colour mixing and brush skills.

Exploring famous artwork of London, by Monet and Turner, in particular.

P.E.
Tuesdays: Hockey with Miss Brewster. Thursdays: Running skills and dance with Mrs Smith.

Please ensure children have kit – school shorts and t-shirts for indoor games and suitable warm clothes i.e. jogging bottoms and sweatshirts for later in the term when outdoors.

Science
To link with our history topic, Rocks and Soils, followed by ‘Magnets’.
ICT
Early steps in programming and word processing.
Music

Making music fun!

Lots of listening to, and learning about a range of music. Singing and rhythm activities to develop core skills. Applying our knowledge and skills to our dinosaur theme. Please speak to Mrs Cook if your child has an interest in learning an instrument. We will endeavour to accommodate if at all possible.

History/Geography

We are going to start at the beginning – Dinosaurs!

A fun topic with lots of opportunities for cross curricular work. Facts, fiction and poetry. Learning where Dinosaurs fit into world history and beginning to develop historical skills. Exploring evidence – what and how we know about this fascinating topic.

We will continue the historical story after Christmas…

Later on….

‘Ticket to Britain’.

Learning where we are in the world. Continents, countries and compasses. Learning about Britain, exploring a contrasting location and finding out about famous Britons and historical events.

French

First steps in modern foreign languages for Y2.

For Y3, building on previous vocabulary and extending to new vocabulary..

Design Technology
Making Dinosaur models.
Religious Education (R.E.)

Where, how and why do Christians worship?

Rituals, symbols and sounds used in worship.
